I loved this book!

This book was so different from anything I have ever read.

Apparently, after reading the author's bio, I learned that she grew up in the same town that she wrote her book about, and she is a champion Irish dancer, which is why her lingo for the dancing was accurate, which really placed you into the novel because the author really knew her stuff. No flaky descriptions. This was well written.

So on that note, if you don't care for Irish dancing, or Celtic mythology, then this book might not be for you. Like I said before, I have never read a book like this, but I loved it. It was amazing.

Our protagonist is a teenage girl, McKayla. She loves to dance, has a typical high school crush, sweet best friend, loving family, and crazy aunt. But McKayla is special. Strange things are going on, and through the help of McKayla's gifted aunt, she learns of her own special abilities. A creepy woman is sneaking around town and has a foul purpose that McKayla's aunt is trying to unearth.

There is just something so unique about this story. The author focuses a lot on dance and the emotions behind it. A mysterious lame janitor has a remarkable ability to dance, and McKayla is drawn to him and the emotion behind his moves.

The scary lady keeps showing up, and circumstances become dangerous. We never really learn anyone's motivation right away. I think that is why I was drawn. I feel that the protagonist's own emotion at discovering her music and her new gift pulled me along.

Until all of a sudden, disaster strikes, and that's when I knew I loved this novel. Hero's emerge, magic reveals, and the mysteriousness blossoms. I hope you like banshees. They are in this novel, and it is cool and scary. The author brought in the element of mythology and a whole other world. Oooo, and there is a dragon. I think that gives too much away. But the novel is so magical. I think that some readers might be put off by all the dancing, but it only made the novel better. The dancing was a way for the main character to learn her abilities, so for me, it worked, and I grew with the character.

I will most certainly be reading the next books and checking out more by this author.

Written very well, smooth language, quick read. Clean read. Great for 13 year olds and up.

Awakening Book One of the Geis Christy Dorrity Dennis Dorrity Devon Dorrity 9781940427027 Books Reviews

The cover got my attention, the synopsis sold me and from the first page I was sucked in. This story was very well written with great characters you could just fall in love with. The author really helps you feel the emotions of the characters. I often found myself feeling scared and heartbroken and excited along with the characters. I really loved how the author told us the back story for a couple of the characters that seemed to be very mysterious. This way we were able to get to know them better and understand why they are the way they are. I really enjoyed this book and am excited for the next book. I would defiantly recommend this book.
I wasn't going to download this book at first because of the cover, which looks like it would be a horror novel. I took a chance, hoping for the best and I'm SO glad I did. I'm happy to report Awakening isn't horror. It's seven kinds of better than that. I don't think we've seen her best and Christy just got started on what I think is going to be a wonderful career.

I felt like I was given a gift when I began reading this yesterday. The adventure only got better today when I finished. It's an easy read, only taking a few hours, but for those few hours I found Christy had raised the bar when it came to writing the right combination of magic/adventure/clean romance. I hope the world's authors are cursed with the same inspiration she has and that they will never recover!

One of my favorite things is how she wove mystical adventure in the modern world without entering a world of moral compromises. This book proves that you can write a book without pushing the moral compass to point to sex. It was also refreshing to read a book where teens aren't potty-mouthed selfish deviants.
Christy Dorrity's Awakening is at least the third book/series that I have read that involves the Tuatha de Danaan. However, this book is completely different from all of the others!
This book, the debut story from Christy Dorrity, is a great story. I don't usually feature a lot of YA on my blog, because I do review quite a few books that are targeted to 18+, however I must say, I cannot wait for book two Displaced.

McKayla is an average 16 year old girl, with a baby brother Benji and an eleven year old sister, Zoey. However things are not as they appear. Once Aunt Avril appears on the scene, average is the last word you would use to describe 'Kayla (as Zoey calls her).

There is so much that I want to tell you, but as my favorite character in Doctor Who says, "Spoilers!"

Check out this amazing YA debut novel today!
This is one of my first ventures into the paranormal genre, but I thought it was a really unique angle. Not the typical vampires or ghosts (no spoilers here). It was much more intriguing, and there were many scenes thereafter with cool ideas or action that made me wish it were a movie. Sometimes there were a few too many details about dance steps or cooking for me (these are the author's other passions according to the bio), but everything was eloquently written and free of editorial errors. The mystery was good, and the paranormal element was just spooky enough to be exciting without being freaky. The romance element was very real from McKayla's perspective, and I felt myself empathizing with her roller coaster emotions. Both were handled really well, without any graphic sex or gore. The grand finale "battle scene" was innovative and basically awesome, like a really creative fantasy by someone who refuses to follow every cliche.

It also jolted me initially that the point of view switched back and forth between first person from a teen perspective to third person omniscient. Once I got used to it, though, it didn't bother me much.

Overall, I liked the story, thoughI kept waiting for it to grip me a little tighter. About half way through it did, and then it didn't let go! A worthwhile read for YA/paranormal/sweet romance fans all the same.
