I love a novel when it deals with history so this book The Familiars by Stacey Halls was so good I could not put it down. The book takes you back to the sixteenth century in England that dealt with witches. The lead character was a woman named Fleetwood Shuttleworth who was sixteen years old and married to a young English nobleman. Fleetwood was pregnant again after losing the child three times before. She was determined to give her husband a son.Stacey Hall wove a very good story that kept me fascinated throughout the book. Fleetwood found a girl named Alice who was good with oils and herbs that help to improve her health. Fleetwood was devastated when Alice was picked up and imprisoned as a witch.
The Author wove many events of that time as men ruled the home and country that kept your interest throughout the book. I love a good story when it deals with times past and how people lived. The Familiars by Stacy Halls was a great book will keep you entertained to the end.

The Familiars by Stacey Halls is a fictional account leading up to the 1612 Pendle Witch Trials, featuring actual historical figures. Seventeen-year-old Fleetwood Shuttleworth becomes mistress of Gawthorpe Hall, near Pendle, and gets drawn into the controversy over her midwife's, Alice Grey, alleged involvement with the "Pendle Witches" at Malkin Tower. I did know a bit about the Pendle Witch Trials prior to reading this novel, having watched a documentary about the subject, so it was interesting to read a ground-level, fictional account of this historical event. When we first meet Fleetwood, we recognize that she is very much a young woman of her time and social class (which at times can be frustrating to a modern reader, particularly with Fleetwood's relationship with her husband.) She is happy with her match of a husband of social standing, and wishes to please him by providing a male heir. However, having suffered two miscarriages, Fleetwood is desperate to hold on to her third pregnancy. She stumbles upon Alice Grey in the woods of the Gawthorpe property and soon finds that this enigmatic, "low-born" woman has knowledge of herbs and natural medicine, as well as midwifery.Fleetwood and Alice soon form a sisterly bond of trust and familiarity in Alice's successful minding of Fleetwood's pregnancy, yet Alice seems to also hold Fleetwood at an arm's length--leading Fleetwood to uncover Alice's secrets. Not only does Fleetwood discover Alice's alleged "involvement" with the Pendle Witches, but also the identities of the women accused of witchcraft at the hands of a power hungry Sheriff who was once like a father to Fleetwood.Halls' writing style makes for fast and engaging reading. Her descriptions are colorful and sensory, and the magical aspect of this novel is always on the periphery. We're never given a full explanation of how Alice can do what she can do in terms of a familiar, nor does Fleetwood seem to press after she makes the connection. In turn, the end of the novel was quite abrupt, but features a brave move by Fleetwood which embodies the self-assured woman she has become as opposed to the fearful and eager to please young woman at the beginning of the novel. Not only is there a magical aspect to familiars, but also a more ordinary interpretation in that Fleetwood and Alice were familiars to each other.
I was really looking forward to this novel and the concept, reading the female perspective is always interesting when it takes place in a primarily male dominant era, but a pregnant woman whose life is on the line? Feelings beware!
This novel just absolutely drew me in and spit me out, the ending had me shouting “No! It’s over?!” Though there were bits that had me longing for the more dramatic parts, but they were remedied fairly quickly.
It's hard to write a review for a book that's so good that doesn't include spoilers. I will try
Set in the early 17th century in England, it's a time of great upheaval and superstition. A young lady (well, young for our standards) is pregnant again. Because the local "doctor" believes she will die with this pregnancy, she gets involved with the local witch coven (aka the Pendle witches).
Rarely does a book make me run to read up on a topic on Wikipedia. This did. Stacy Halls has blended fiction, history and a bit of magic into a really, really good book.
The Familiars by Stacey Halls is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in early February.
A woman named Fleetwood has married rich and lives comfortably in a northeast English manner, yet is doomed with pregnancy after several miscarriages. Although their small community is rife with rumors of witchcraft, she takes on a mysterious woman, Alice Gray, as midwife. In a kind of gothic, ruminating way, you get the impression that women who are eccentric or have wronged men in some way are being arrested as witches, but then it all slowly unravels with interrogations and paranoia.
Fleetwood Shuttleworth is only 17 years old, but she's pregnant for the fourth time. It's 1612, and her duty is to bring forth an heir for her husband. When she finds a physician's letter saying that she won't survive another pregnancy, she is determined to bring her child into the world. So, she consults Alice Gray, a midwife, who starts giving her herbal remedies.
Soon, though, Alice is in the sights of Roger Nowell, the local magistrate ... because he wants to make a name for himself with King James, and decides that accusing various women of witchcraft is a good way to do it.
This novel examines the true case of Lancashire's Pendle witches (one of the best-documented sets of witch trials available to historians) through Fleetwood's eyes. She gives voice to the rare opinion that women are being accused indiscriminately and inaccurately, even knowing that she may herself be found guilty by association.
This book is impeccably researched and well-written. It is peopled with characters both historical and fictional, but all well fleshed-out and relatable. Highly recommended.
