Born in Blood The Sentinels Alexandra Ivy Books
Born in Blood is the first full-length book in her Sentinels series. I am an Alexandra Ivy fan and have read her Guardians of Eternity series so I was excited to start a new series by this author. I really enjoyed this new world and look forward to future books. The story is about a world where supernaturals are "out" to the humans. The humans know witches, psychics, necromancers, and sentinels (which are the warriors/hunters of the supernatural) all exist. They live in a domed city called Valhalla and usually stay fairly separate from the humans unless they are "needed".
In this book a human is found dead without a heart but with no wounds. When a crime such as this happens, the police work with the supernatural (in this case a necromancer). Callie is a necromancer and in this world a necromancer is able to get into the mind of the dead and witness their last moments to find out how they died. Callie is working with Sgt Duncan who has his own secrets he's been hiding.
Duncan has always been attracted to Ivy and unlike other humans he isn't afraid or disgusted by the "freaks" as the humans call them or the "highbloods" as they call themselves. Callie is also attracted to Duncan but she is far more reticent about getting involved with a human.
First of all, I loved the concept of this book. I liked the world building and although it wasn't a brand new idea it was very well done. I liked Callie's character and although she isn't a kick-butt warrior she was strong in her own way. I like to see some female characters who aren't all warriors and Callie was intriguing. Necromancers are the supernaturals who most freak out the humans and who don't even quite fit in with other supernaturals. They are assigned a sentinel to protect them as they are vulnerable when they are delving into the minds of the dead. Duncan is a cop through and through. He has a sarcastic sense of humor and he's a bit arrogant. He was spoiled as the youngest in a large family and he knows he's good looking. However, his arrogance isn't over the top and he is actually quite charming. He accepts Callie for who she is and even when he wants to lock her away and keep her safe he knows that she is independent and can make her own decisions.
Callie's sentinel Fane plays a fairly large role in this book as well and I really liked him. Obviously Duncan and Fane don't get along and they have a lot of who's the "biggest man" moments. Fane comes across as the strong and silent type opposed to Duncan's in your face personality and it made for some good moments between two of them.
The plot of this book surrounds another very old necromancer who has abilities that other necromancers don't have and he plans to build an army of the dead. He is working with a powerful witch who doesn't mind doing black magic. We get quite a bit of info from their POV as well in this book. I enjoyed it but <spoiler> I wish that the bad guy wasn't so easily defeated at the end and would have maybe even carried over through more of the series </spoiler>. The villains were interesting and I liked knowing quite a bit about them, where they came from and what they wanted.
There are some twists and turns and a secret or two that are revealed that keeps the story interesting. The romance happens a bit quickly in my opinion and a little more backstory between the two of them would have made it more realistic but other than that it was well written. They are both a little afraid of what is happening between them but willing to put themselves out there.
Overall, a very enjoyable start what looks like it will be a great paranormal romance series.

Born in Blood The Sentinels Alexandra Ivy Books Reviews
I absolutely love the Guardians of Eternity series so I was thrilled when the author started up a new series that is like a paranormal X-Men type world. I didn't get a chance to jump on it when it was brand spanking new, but was no less eager when I sat down to finally read the first book. I read the prequel earlier and decided that it was one of those that probably would have worked better after reading this book. I was very right. The prequel is Niko's story and he is a side character in this book. The parallel storylines make better sense now. I had a good time with this book. I enjoyed the way the Sentinel world was introduced in layers as the story progresses, the intricate plot that is also part suspense, and the great characters. Duncan O'Conner was a huge charmer, but capable and Callie Brown was a strong heroine without all the annoying habits that get me twitchy. Better yet, they fit together well both in their relationship and their work.
The story opens when Callie and Duncan are called in by their respective authority figures to work the case of a woman murdered in her home. Duncan represents the human police and Callie comes from the extra-human magical community of nearby Valhalla. She is a necromancer who can get at a person's last thoughts so is often called in to help solve murders particularly if the murder might involve a highborn like herself. In this instance with the woman's heart missing without any visible signs of how it was take from the body, the regular humans don't hesitate to call her in. She and Duncan have a history of shared cases and both are very drawn to each other particularly now that Duncan's ex remarried.
Callie doesn't know what to make of the case especially since another more powerful necromancer joined her in the dead woman's memories almost taunting her with promises that there is more to come and she really doesn't know what to make of Duncan's interest. Normally she is kept at arm's length even by her own people because her gift connects her with the dead. Duncan seems un-phased by that and tells her honestly that he just wants to pursue their attraction and see where it leads. He loves his life as a cop and he has secrets that he wants to stay secret. She cannot live out in the normal world so he is aware that things might be short-term. In the meantime, they work together to figure out what this other very powerful necromancer is up to. If he is who they think he is, then things are going to get bad quick and they don't have much time to stop whatever it is he is planning.
As I said, I was fascinated by the world building and I really liked the characters and action/suspense plot. The pace was good. The passion was hot. Some things developed nicely like the action and worldbuilding, but I will say that the romance has a fated-mates feel to it. I didn't mind that, but there was a part of me that wished that if it was going to be there that it was just explained as part of the highborn thing. Another thing I noticed that didn't bug me, but was still a niggle was that the biggest barrier to their romance was dismissed rather quickly as one of the characters just decided to concede without a lot of discussion, info gathering or seeming thought and it was a rather big decision to just make a five second choice.
Neither the fated mates or the rushed through the thing with the romance ruined the story. It was still exciting, passionate and engaging. I loved the intro to this series and look forward to seeing each Sentinel get their story. I have a bit of a crush on the leader, Wolfe, though I suppose his story is way far down the road. I think this will definitely have appeal for those who enjoy those humans with extra gifts stories, but paranormal romance fans and even romantic suspense fans might really appreciate this series too.
This book was soo much better than I anticipated. When it started with a hung over hero, and what seemed to be a meek heroine, I was expecting something completely different. One of those, oh she's going to save him from himself kinda things. Instead, we got something completely different.
Alexandra Ivy has created an amazing world that is more and more complex. She layers the magic in with family and how the world really works today. Then she tops it off with characters that are so complicated and rich. You can't pigeonhole any of her characters, and if you do, she will throw you for a loop. And there is a dooozy at the end if you aren't paying attention.
I can't wait to learn more about this world and these characters.
